Solar thermal process heat – solar thermal cooling
The OGM Obstgroßmarkt Mittelbaden eG is a producers' cooperative for worldwide sales of a varied range of fruits. A great deal of energy is required to keep this fruit fresh. The cooperative therefore decided to install a solar thermal plant to reduce the high cost of the energy.
In close cooperation with the "aeteba Projektmanagement" engineering office, an exemplary, standalone2, large-scale solar thermal plant is being built on a facade. The 409 m² solar plant has an installed collector capacity of 287 kW and supplies the power distribution network of the wholesale fruit market with process heat by means of a 30,000 L buffer storage system.
The solar thermal energy is largely needed to drive the absorption refrigerating system which in turn provides cooling to the cold storage cells to keep the fruit fresh. The cooperative decided in favour of a high-performance full vacuum tube collector with an especially long service life to ensure a continuously invariable and nearly loss-free energy input by way of the solar plant for the process heat supply.
Thanks to the solar plant, approx. 30 tonnes of CO2 and around 14,000 m3 of natural gas will be saved on a permanent basis in future.
