Wind farm optimisation

Front-row turbines in offshore wind farms catch most of the wind. At the same time, they cause slipstreams many kilometres in length, characterised by slower wind and increased turbulence, thereby negatively impacting downstream wind energy systems. Processes to date modelling such slipstream systems are imprecise or require considerable processing power. In order to better model these slipstream systems, scientists at the Center for Wind Energy Research (Zentrum für Windenergieforschung - ForWind) have developed a new model and software that help optimise farms. Both can be used to precisely forecast wind farm output and optimise the farm layout.
