Energy efficient extraction of solid fuel from wet biomass

A novel process for energy recovery from biogenic waste

At the Kaiserslautern waste water treatment plant sewage sludge is converted into renewable coal, which can be used as alternative fuel for heat and power generation, thereby substituting for fossil fuel coal. TerraNova Energy systems utilise the principle of hydrothermal carbonisation, which accelerates the naturally occurring coal synthesis to mere hours. The robust, exothermal catalytic process is very efficient due to the entire conversion of the biomass into fuel. It is particularly suitable for the utilisation of biomass waste with high water content or biogenic sludge. The resulting coal is sanitised and easily stored. According to needs, it is delivered as pellets or coal dust.
